What is a Hydronic Heating System?
By ProMatcher Staff
The Basics:
A hydronic heating system uses a boiler to heat water in a central location. The hot water is then circulated through water pipes, baseboards heaters, and radiators where the radiant heat can increase the surrounding air temperature.
Hydronic heating systems may also be called:
1. Radiant heating systems
2. Boiler heating systems
3. Radiant floor heating systems (when heaters and pipes are only located in the floors)
What is a boiler?
A boiler is at the center of a hydronic heating system, not a furnace. At times, the terms are confused.
A boiler is a hot water (or steam) heating system.
A furnace is a hot air heating system.
Additionally, although a boiler heats water, it is not just a water heater. A water heater is not typically used to heat living spaces. It is used to heat the water that supplies faucets and appliances.
