Boiler Inspection Checklist

By ProMatcher Staff

Do I need a boiler inspection?

Some jurisdictions require annual boiler inspections and there are often penalties for non-compliance. A boiler inspector can identify potential problems to prevent a dangerous leak or rupture. If you are purchasing a new home, you should have the boiler inspected as part of your home inspection. Also, you should have your boiler inspected after a new installation.

Although most residential boilers do not need to be inspected every year, they should be inspected periodically to ensure that they are working properly (especially if you have a high-pressure or steam boiler). The cost of these preventative measures may help you avoid a costly accident.

A boiler inspector will:

- Ensure the room is clean and free of debris/clutter

- Check the water quality

- Ensure all gauges are working properly

- Make sure the boiler is free of rust and corrosion

- Inspect fittings and valves

- Estimate remaining life of the boiler

- Inspect the chimney and exhaust vents

- Check function of pilot light or electric ignition

- Test for gas leaks and carbon monoxide issues

- Inspect all valves and fittings

- Check relief valves and emergency shut-off

- Suggest repairs

- Prepare a written report of the finding
