The cost of installing a boiler will increase or decrease based upon a number of factors. This article is intended to provide you a checklist of questions to ask yourself and your contractor.

What type of boiler do I need?
$ - When a floor standing boiler is installed.
$$ - When a wall-mounted boiler is installed.
$$$ - When a combi boiler is installed (A combi boiler serves as a heating unit and a hot water heater).
What size boiler do I need?
$ - For a 50,000 BTU boiler
$$ - For a 100,000 BTU boiler

What fuel source will the boiler run on?
$ - Electric boiler
$$ - Gas boiler
$$ - Oil boiler
$$ - Propane boiler
What type of efficiency do I need? $ - For a low efficiency boiler (AFUE under 80%). Can be found in old homes and on the secondary market. Low efficiency boilers do not meet the Department of Energy's minimum standards.
$$ - For a mid-efficiency boiler (AFUE between 80-85%)
$$$ - For a high-efficiency boiler (AFUE above 90%)

Am I converting the fuel source?
$ - When a gas boiler is replaced with a gas boiler.
$$ - When an oil-powered boiler is replaced with a gas boiler (This may require the installation of a new gas line and the removal of the existing oil tank).
Do I need a condensing boiler?
$ - When a non-condensing boiler is installed.
$$ - When a condensing boiler is installed (Condensing boilers are more energy efficient).
Do any additional pipes, baseboard heaters, or radiators need to be installed?
$ - When only the boiler is replaced.
$$$ - When pipes, radiators, or baseboard heaters are installed in addition to the boiler.
Does a new chimney liner need to be installed?
$ - When the chimney liner does not need to be replaced.
$$ - When the chimney liner is replaced (Sometimes the installation of a high-efficiency boiler requires a new chimney liner).
