What is a Boiler Heating System?

What is a boiler heating system?

A boiler heating system uses a boiler (which is a closed tank that heats water to a high temperature) to heat water. The hot water (or the steam by-product) is then circulated through the pipes as part of a central heating system. The heat from pipes, radiators, and baseboard heaters works to increase air temperature in an enclosed space. These systems are also known as "radiant heating systems" or "hydronic heating systems."

Is a boiler the same thing as a furnace?

A boiler is not a furnace, although the terms are confused at times. A boiler is a hot water (or steam) heating system. A furnace is a hot air heating system.

A boiler uses piping and pumps to distribute water into radiators (which expel heat) placed throughout a home or building. A furnace relies on a blower to push heated air through a ductwork system.

Is a boiler the same thing as a water heater?

A boiler does in fact heat water, but it is not the same appliance we typically refer to as a "water heater." A water heater is not used for heating spaces. It is used for heating water that is used by fixtures like sinks, showers, and appliances. A boiler heats water that will eventually run through pipes to provide heat.

Steam boilers vs. Water boilers

As the names suggest, steam boilers distribute steam and water boilers distribute water through a piping system into radiators and baseboard baseboard heaters. Steam boilers are typically less efficient than hot water boilers, but there are high-efficiency models available. However, steam boilers can often reach higher temperatures than hot water boilers.

Free Quotes from Boiler Contractors

Boilers are fueled by a variety of sources. Currently, there are electric, natural gas, liquid propane, and oil-powered boilers available. Boilers are commonly found in commercial and industrial properties due to their ability to heat large spaces.

Natural gas is the most common fuel used to power boilers.
